Exploring the Royal Path: Your Guide to the 8 Limbs of Yoga

Gaby Knight | JAN 4

Have you ever felt like you needed a compass for life? Something to help guide your choices, quiet the noise in your head, and help you show up as the very best version of yourself?

I’ve often found that we aren't always automatically aware of the "rights and wrongs" in every situation. We all have moments of uncertainty. That is why I am so passionate about the Eight Limbs of Yoga. More than just physical exercise, this system is a beautiful roadmap for self-transformation and inner peace.

The Royal Path to You

In the Yoga Sutras, the sage Patanjali outlined these eight steps as a way to master the mind and eventually reach Samadhi a state of liberation and pure bliss.

This system is often called Ashtanga Yoga. In Sanskrit:

  • Ashta means "Eight"

  • Anga means "Limbs"

It is also known as Raja Yoga, or "Royal Yoga." The name suggests that by practicing these steps, you take charge of your life and move toward your most "royal," authentic self. Each limb embodies the unique energies we possess as humans, helping us move from the outside world into the depths of our own hearts.

The 8-Fold Path

The first two limbs form our ethical core, the "how-to" of living well with others and ourselves. Here is a brief look at the full path:

  1. Yamas: Intelligent behaviors (How we interact with the world).

  2. Niyamas: Personal attitudes (How we care for ourselves).

  3. Asana: Bodily exercise (The physical postures).

  4. Pranayama: Vital energy and breath (Harnessing our life force).

  5. Pratyahara: Sensory awareness (Turning our attention inward).

  6. Dharana: Focusing attention (Concentration on a single point).

  7. Dhyana: Sustaining attention (Meditation and flow).

  8. Samadhi: Increasing wholeness (Liberation and connection to the all).

Why Follow the Limbs?

If your goal or intention is to find more liberation and clarity in your life, these limbs offer the perfect guideline. They remind us that yoga isn’t just about how flexible our bodies are, but how flexible and kind our minds can be. When we follow this path, we become the person we were always meant to be.

Journaling Prompts

Here are some journal prompts designed to help you reflect on the 8 Limbs of Yoga and how they can guide you toward your "royal" self:

1. Cultivating the "Royal" Path

Since Raja Yoga is the "Royal Path," imagine yourself living in total alignment with these 8 steps. If you were fully mastering your mind and energy, how would your daily habits change? What would you let go of, and what new "royal" qualities would you embrace to become the best version of yourself?

2. Seeking Wholeness (Samadhi)

The final limb, Samadhi, is often described as a state of "increasing wholeness" or liberation. What areas of your life currently feel fragmented or out of balance? How could using the 8-fold path as a guideline help you bridge those gaps and move toward a feeling of complete wholeness and freedom?

With love and light,
