Love, Paws, and Yogic Naps: Our Unexpected Family Story

Hello, lovely readers! Today, I want to share a little story from the heart – a tale about love, furry friends, and finding harmony in the most unexpected ways.
It all began in 2019 when I met my husband, Tanner. I had my sweet cat, Smokey, and Tanner had two dogs: Jack, a friendly Labrador, and Max, a beagle with a nose for trouble. The challenge? Max wasn’t a fan of cats. Every time he saw a feline, he would go into attack mode, which made blending our families a bit nerve-wracking.
We started cautiously. Our first plan was to get them used to each other's scent. We kept Smokey safely tucked away in a separate room. Max, being the super-sniffer he was, knew exactly where Smokey was and would spend ages scratching at the door. The tension was pretty high, and one day, my biggest fear almost came true. Max made a sudden lunge towards Smokey! Thankfully, I intervened just in time. This showed us we had a long way to go.

Fast forward to May 2020. The world was navigating the pandemic, and life felt a bit upside down. In the midst of it all, I decided to start my Yoga Nidra teacher training online. Around the same time, Tanner and I decided to move in together. This meant our furry crew – Smokey, Jack, and the cat-skeptic Max had to figure out how to coexist.
During my training, I often practiced Yoga Nidra in the room where Smokey felt safest. My training required regular practice, so I often practiced alongside Tanner while Smokey, Jack, and Max settled down in the same space. Unintentionally, we all ended up taking constant yogic naps together!
And here’s where something truly magical happened. As I deepened my own practice, I had a realization. A lot of my own fear and anxiety about Max potentially hurting Smokey was creating tension in the house. I was projecting my worry, and the animals could feel it. As I learned to let go of that fear through Yoga Nidra, and as we all shared those quiet, peaceful moments of rest, a shift began. Eventually, they started acting like best friends, napping and walking by each other peacefully.

Jack was a furry angel through it all. He was always loving and welcoming to Smokey from day one, maybe even more so than he sometimes was with his own brother Max! He was the steady, calming presence holding space for everyone.
Life continued, and our sweet Max faced another battle later on – prostate cancer. Yoga Nidra played a role in helping him through that difficult time, too, offering comfort and peace (but that’s a longer story for another day). One of the most touching things I witnessed during his recovery was Smokey, the very cat Max once disliked, gently comforting him, curling up nearby as if offering silent support.

Sadly, we said goodbye to our dear Max in September 2022. Losing him left a huge hole in our hearts. But his journey with us, especially his transformation from a cat-chaser to Smokey’s peaceful housemate, left an incredible mark.
Yoga Nidra didn't just benefit me; it brought our entire family, humans, cat, and dogs together in a shared sense of peace. It helped us navigate fear, change, and illness, ultimately allowing us to grow as a true family of five.

Max will always be missed, but he left us with the most beautiful reminder: no matter the challenges, no matter the differences, love always, always comes first.
Sending warm wishes and happy tails (and paws!) your way,
Thank you for reading.
